Essence and Allure
Andrew Maglathlin
I am interested in collecting images of forms and surfaces that are wild and eccentric. When searching for these visual treasures, I think about how their various elements could speak through a sculpture, painting, or vessel. My goal is to not recreate these references, but rather, allow my artwork to be influenced by their essence and allure.

I use traditional pottery and the vessel as a reference and as a platform to merge sculpture and painting. I want my pieces to be ambiguous and to evoke something in the viewer that is both familiar and at the same time distant. Painting multiple layers of glaze and slip, the pieces slowly progress through a metamorphosis, as a dialog is created between the form and surface.
